Golf in Bermuda
With so many rich residents and with a booming, tax-friendly banking industry to support it is little wonder that golf is popular on Bermuda. There are more courses per square mile than anywhere else on earth, the tourist agencies say, though when you realise that there are just 22 square miles of Bermudan land to start with you’ll see why they’ve got their tongues in their cheeks.
Still, you’ll find eight key courses, some designed by the likes of Robert Trent Jones and Charles Blair MacDonald. Members Only signs hang on many of them. But others are open to holidaymakers or businessmen so give it a try. Walking tours are also popular for people who don’t get to walk round a golf course.
Several local residents run long-established guided walks and the Bermuda Railway Trail is particularly popular. Some tennis courts are open the visitors as well. Bermuda has hosted major events on the men’s professional tour – and even claims to have introduced the game to the United States back in the 1870s.
